Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, located using surveillance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of entry passages leading to the facility... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eliminate any re-emergence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary said.

UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this mission for their skill and their courage," Healey commented. "They were among a great many UK service members on duty over the holidays. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

Last December, the American forces carried out what it called a "major assault" targeting IS targets in the country, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates Islamic State still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
